For spouses, children, parents, and certain relatives of U.S. citizens or green card holders.

What Are Family-Based Green Cards?

Through family-based green cards, we help certain relatives of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (green card holders) obtain permanent residence in the United States.

Your eligibility for a family-based green card depends on your specific family relationship and the immigration status of the sponsoring relative.

While some family categories have visas available immediately, some categories are backlogged, depending on the sponsor’s citizenship and your country of birth.  If your case is subject to annual limits, it may result in longer wait times.

Several advantages

Benefits of a Family-Based Green Card

Types of categories

Immediate Relatives vs. Family Preference Categories

There are two types of Family-Based immigration categories that are available:

Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens

This category generally includes:

  • Spouses
  • Unmarried children under 21
  • Parents of U.S. citizens (if the citizen is at least 21)

These categories are not subject to annual visa limits which makes the process faster.

Family Preference Categories

Other family relationships fall into other family preference categories with annual visa limits. We will help you navigate the waiting periods that may apply depending on demand and country of origin.

Examples include:

  • Adult children of U.S. citizens
  • Siblings of U.S. citizens
  • Spouses or children of permanent residents
